Gynecomastia
What is Gynecomastia?
Gynecomastia is the enlargement of breast tissue in men. This condition usually begins during puberty and often resolves on its own. However, in some cases, gynecomastia can also occur in adult men.
Gynecomastia usually occurs due to hormonal changes or imbalances. An increase in oestrogen hormone levels or a decrease in testosterone hormone levels can cause breast tissue to grow. However, certain medications, alcohol consumption, certain diseases or genetic factors can also cause gynecomastia.
Symptoms of gynecomastia include breast tissue enlargement, nipple sensitivity, nipple or breast tissue pain, and a feeling of firmness in the breasts. These symptoms can cause significant psychological stress in men.
Gynecomastia usually resolves on its own, but may require treatment depending on the underlying cause. Treatment may involve identifying and treating the underlying cause. While causes such as hormonal imbalances or medication side effects can be treated, gynecomastia surgery may also be an option. This surgical procedure involves reducing or removing breast tissue.
How is Gynecomastia Performed?
Gynecomastia is defined as the enlargement of breast tissue in men, not a surgical procedure. However, surgical intervention may be necessary in the treatment of gynecomastia. Gynecomastia surgery is a procedure that involves removing or reducing excess breast tissue in men.
Gynecomastia surgery can be performed under general anaesthesia or local anaesthesia. During surgery, the doctor makes an incision to remove or reduce breast tissue. Removal of breast tissue can be performed in small areas, such as the tissue around the nipple or the tissue between the nipple and the breast tissue.
Breast tissue reduction can be performed using liposuction or ultrasonic liposuction methods. In these methods, the doctor uses a thin tube called a cannula to suck out the breast tissue.
Gynecomastia surgery is generally a safe procedure, and patients usually recover within a few days. Post-surgery pain, swelling, and bruising may occur, and the recovery process may vary depending on the patient's age, health condition, and the extent of the procedure. After surgery, patients should generally avoid exercise for a few weeks and take the recommended medications regularly.
